Access and Funding: How Veterans Get Ibogaine Treatment Today

Access and funding: how veterans get ibogaine treatment today

Heroic Hearts Project, VETS Inc., MAPS — and the practical access guide. The nonprofits filling the gap and the steps a veteran takes to actually get treatment abroad.

Several veteran-focused nonprofits currently fund international ibogaine treatment for US veterans. These organizations are the practical answer to “how does a veteran actually access this care today?”

The nonprofits

  • Heroic Hearts Project — provides scholarships and grants for veterans seeking psychedelic-assisted therapy abroad, including ibogaine. Application processes vary; demand exceeds supply, so waitlists can be long.
  • VETS Inc. (Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions) — founded by Marcus and Amber Capone after Marcus’s own ibogaine treatment for combat-related TBI. Funds international psychedelic therapy trips and integration support for Special Operations veterans, with an emphasis on post-treatment community.
  • MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) — broader psychedelic research and access advocacy; some veteran-specific programming.
  • Other smaller nonprofits and direct-fundraising paths — GoFundMe campaigns, family contributions, and community fundraising remain common.

Veteran-focused clinics in our directory frequently offer veteran-specific discounts ($1,000–$2,500 off) or dedicated veteran programs. Filter the provider directory for veteran-friendly clinics.

Practical access guide

Pre-treatment

  • Cardiac screening is essential. TBI and chronic stress profiles can affect cardiac risk; bring complete VA medical records, including any cardiac history. The Stanford 2024 protocol used magnesium pre-treatment specifically to mitigate cardiac risk.
  • Medication taper. Many service members are on SSRIs, mood stabilizers, sleep medications, or other psychiatric medications that require taper before ibogaine. Plan 4–8 weeks for tapering, in consultation with your prescriber.
  • Disclose your full history. Combat exposure, blast injuries, prior surgeries, current medications. The clinic uses this to plan dosing and monitoring.

Logistics

  • Travel: Most veteran-friendly clinics provide airport transfers. Budget for international flights separately.
  • Companion travel: Some programs encourage a partner or family member to attend; budget accordingly. Some clinics charge for companion accommodations, others include them.
  • Communication during treatment: Clinics typically maintain a family contact protocol; share that with the people who matter to you.
  • Time off: Plan a minimum of 10–14 days for the trip, ideally longer for travel and recovery on either end.

Aftercare

  • Integration is the work. See Aftercare and integration for a full overview. Plan therapy or coaching for 6 months post-treatment.
  • Veteran community. Heroic Hearts and VETS Inc. both run integration programming specifically for veterans. The peer dimension matters; veterans who isolate after treatment have worse outcomes than those who connect with peer communities.
  • Medication resumption. Coordinate with your prescriber. Do not resume psychiatric medications unilaterally.
